The Moonstone glowed brighter than ever, and the little people declared a Festival of Lights. Lanterns made of acorn caps and firefly glow dotted the forest. Tiny drums beat a rhythm, and flutes made of reeds played melodies that made Lily's heart feel light.

"You should dance," Bramble said, tugging a strand of her hair.

Lily laughed. "I'm too big."

"Then watch."

The little people spun in circles, their movements quick and joyful. Thorn, usually so stern, twirled with a rare smile. Even the beetles clicked in time.

Lily clapped her hands softly, careful not to blow anyone over.

Then the music stopped.

A hush fell over the crowd.

A figure emerged from the shadows-tall, thin, draped in silver. Her eyes were stars, her hair a cascade of moonlight.

"I am Selene," she said. "Guardian of the Moonstone."

The little people bowed.

Selene turned to Lily. "You have done what no giant has done before. You have earned a gift."

"I don't need a gift," Lily said.

Selene smiled. "Then you are worthy of one."

She touched Lily's forehead. A warmth spread through her, and when she blinked, she could see the forest differently-the colors brighter, the sounds clearer, the hidden paths revealed.

"You can now see the magic of Fernweald," Selene said. "Even when you return to your own world."

Lily's eyes widened. "I can go home?"

"Whenever you wish. The door is always open."

Lily looked at Bramble, at Thorn, at the little people who had become her friends.

"Not yet," she said.

Selene nodded. "Then stay. There is still much to learn."

The festival resumed, louder and brighter than before.

Lily sat on her mossy knoll, watching the tiny dancers.

She wasn't ready to leave.

Not yet.

Not while there were still stories to share and magic to see.

She tucked the silver flower behind her ear and smiled.

Fernweald had become her home.

And home was wherever the heart was light.

The call came at dawn. Sergeant First Class Marcus Cole was cleaning his cannon, his crew sleeping, the battlefield quiet. Then the radio crackled, and the war started again.

"Hammer Lead, this is Command. We have a downed helicopter in the valley. Pilot is alive, but he's behind enemy lines. You're the closest armor. We need you to get him out."

Marcus looked at the valley, at the hills where the enemy had retreated, at the ground they'd fought for yesterday. "Copy, Command. We're on it."

He woke his crew, briefed them as the engine warmed. "We're going into the valley. The pilot is here." He pointed at the map. "We go in fast, grab him, and get out. No heroics. No stopping. Understood?"

"Sir, yes, sir."

The tank rolled out of the defensive position, down the ridge, into the valley. The terrain was rough, the morning mist hiding the ground. Marcus scanned through his periscope, searching for the downed helicopter.

"There," Chen said. "Two o'clock. Smoke."

Marcus saw it-the wreckage, the pilot waving, the enemy positions on the ridge above. "Diaz, get us there. Fast."

The tank lurched forward, its engine roaring, its tracks chewing up the ground. The enemy saw them, opened fire-small arms, RPGs, mortars. Marcus felt the rounds ping off the armor, felt the explosions shake the hull.

"Chen, suppress those positions. Keep their heads down."

The cannon fired, the machine guns chattered, the enemy fire slackened. The tank reached the wreckage, the pilot running toward them, his face pale, his leg bleeding.

"Covering fire," Marcus shouted. "Diaz, pop smoke."

Smoke canisters deployed, the battlefield disappearing in a cloud. The pilot climbed onto the hull, hands reaching down to pull him into the turret.

"Got him!" Williams shouted. "Go, go, go!"

Diaz reversed, turned, drove through the smoke. The enemy fired blindly, their rounds falling short, their aim lost. The tank climbed out of the valley, back toward the ridge, back toward the American lines.

"Command, Hammer Lead. We have the pilot. Returning to base."

"Copy, Hammer Lead. Medics are standing by."

The tank rolled into the base, its hull scarred, its crew exhausted. The pilot was lifted out, taken to the aid station, his life saved.

Marcus climbed down, stood on the ground, looked at his tank. Chen climbed out beside him.

"That was close."

"They always are."

They walked toward the mess tent, toward coffee and food and the quiet after the mission. Behind them, the tank sat silent, its cannon still warm, its crew resting.

Somewhere in the valley, the enemy was cursing their failure. Somewhere in the base, a pilot who should have died was calling home.

And somewhere in between, Marcus Cole and his crew had done what soldiers do. They'd brought one of their own home.
